Dinosaur Trail- What a course!
For the golfers out there, if you ever get a chance to play Dinosaur Trail in Drumheller, it’s worth a trip - not expensive, $55/person including cart on a Thursday. A couple of km west of the world class Tyrell Museum. We played the white tees so, if you hit your driver well, at 5800 yards, there are lots of birdie opportunities. The back nine is set among the badlands and is very picturesque and challenging. The front is more traditional with large trees along all fairways. Not very forgiving if you stray from the short grass. The greens were true and soft - medium speed, I’d say, not lightning fast. Friendly staff, very accommodating. Oh, and did I mention? I made 3 birdies, 2 on the front, including the #1 handicap hole, and one on the back.
The back nine is really what one comes here to play. TAKE LOTS OF Balls!! Steep drops into the coulees, hoodoos all around. A yardage book is provided – use it! Almost every hole demands shots where the right club selection is crucial. I lost 4 balls on the back on my way to a smooth 50. To be clear, though, none of those were bad yardage, just bad shots. There’s just not a lot of bailout. Several times I said” Now that’s a golf hole!”
Between the 9th and 10th hole, I stopped for a snack and the lady said, as she does to everyone…”Do you have enough BALLS to play the back nine?”
